The answer is both. Elvira Thissen argues that with diminishing returns in medicines it is time for pharma companies to move away from philosophical discussions on prevention and adapt to new realities instead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\u2026]<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Business Case for Prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A recent report by The Vitality Institute \u2013 founded by South Africa\u2019s largest health insurance\u00a0company \u2013 estimates potential annual savings in the US of $217\u2013303 billion on healthcare costs\u00a0by 2023 if evidence-based approaches to\u00a0NCD prevention are rolled out.<\/p>\n<p>At an estimated global cost of illness\u00a0of nearly US$1.4 trillion in 2010 for\u00a0cardiovascular disease and diabetes alone,\u00a0there is a market for prevention. In the UK,\u00a0the NHS spends 10% of its budget on\u00a0treating diabetes, 80% of which goes to managing (partly preventable) complications.
