This kind of\u00a0world view<\/a>\u00a0was widespread among several\u00a0romantic<\/a>\u00a0authors such as\u00a0Lord Byron<\/a>,\u00a0Giacomo Leopardi<\/a>,\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois-Ren\u00e9 de Chateaubriand<\/a>,\u00a0Alfred de Musset<\/a>,\u00a0Nikolaus Lenau<\/a>,\u00a0Hermann Hesse<\/a>, and\u00a0Heinrich Heine<\/a>. It is also used to denote the feeling of\u00a0sadness<\/a>\u00a0when thinking about the evils of the\u00a0world<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The modern meaning of\u00a0Weltschmerz<\/i>\u00a0in the German language is the\u00a0psychological pain<\/a>\u00a0caused by\u00a0sadness<\/a>\u00a0that can occur when realizing that someone’s own weaknesses are caused by the inappropriateness and cruelty of the world and (physical and social) circumstances.\u00a0Weltschmerz<\/i>\u00a0in this meaning can cause\u00a0depression<\/a>,\u00a0resignation<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0escapism<\/a>, and can become a mental problem (compare to\u00a0Hikikomori<\/a>). The modern meaning should also be compared with the concept of\u00a0anomie<\/a>, or a kind of alienation, that\u00a0\u00c9mile Durkheim<\/a>wrote about in his sociological treatise\u00a0Suicide<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n
