{"id":409,"date":"2013-11-19T17:41:34","date_gmt":"2013-11-19T06:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.panicola.com\/?p=409"},"modified":"2013-11-19T17:41:34","modified_gmt":"2013-11-19T06:41:34","slug":"beach-diabetics-spend-an-extra-hour-and-visit-8-more-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.panicola.com\/?p=409","title":{"rendered":"BEACH: Diabetics spend an extra hour and visit 8 more times"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>Type 2 diabetics (vs normals) spend 2.6hrs (1.6hrs) and \u00a0visited 8 (5.6) times per year<\/li>\n<li>Diabetics also utilised allied health more frequently and intensively<\/li>\n<li>Only accounted for 8% of GPs current work load<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalobserver.com.au\/news\/patients-with-diabetes-visit-gps-eight-times-a-year\">http:\/\/www.medicalobserver.com.au\/news\/patients-with-diabetes-visit-gps-eight-times-a-year<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Patients with diabetes visit GPs eight times a year<\/strong><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1;\">19th Nov 2013<\/span><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalobserver.com.au\/author\/69\"><b>Andrew Bracey<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>PATIENTS with type 2 diabetes spend an extra hour a year with their GP compared to other patients, according to new data which has prompted renewed calls for an improved approach to funding for management of the condition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The findings, from the latest Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health (BEACH) study, published this week, showed the average patient spent 1.6 hours a year with their GP, while those with diabetes spent an average of 2.6 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The report, General practice activity in Australia 2012\u201313, \u00a0noted those with diabetes also spent time with a range of allied health professionals as well as practice nurses.<\/p>\n<p>With the management rate of the condition increasing by 33% over the past decade, the authors said type 2 diabetes was \u201cvery resource intensive\u201d and was \u201cbound to increase in future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>BEACH director Associate Professor Helena Britt said type 2 diabetes now accounted for 8% of GPs\u2019 workload and that patients with the condition visited their doctor an average of eight times a year compared to the national average of 5.6 annual visits.<\/p>\n<p>Patients with diabetes had their condition managed at half of their GP consultations, according to the report.?<\/p>\n<p>Brisbane GP Dr Gary Deed said the data confirmed the need to improve funding models for the management of diabetes in general practice.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Deed, who is a director of Diabetes Australia\u2019s Queensland arm and chairs the RACGP\u2019s National Faculty of Special Interests Diabetes Network, said he hoped the Coalition government would undertake a consultation with GPs \u201cat the coalface\u201d as part of efforts to develop a long-term approach to diabetes management. ?<\/p>\n<p>With the majority of patients also having at least two other comorbidities, he said a block funded model, such as the one being trialled under the Diabetes Care Project, created problems with regard to funding of the patient\u2019s whole care.?<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the report found GPs made 7.6 million more referrals in 2012\u201313 than they did a decade ago with the increase split almost evenly between referrals to medical specialists and allied health services.
